      “Can I get teacher’s retirement and Social Security?”. T hat’s one of the most commonly asked questions that I hear whenever I speak or lead a workshop on Social Security.. There’s no doubt this can be a complex topic and most of the teachers that I’ve talked to have seen lots of conflicting information — so let’s clear up the confusion and take a closer look at the rules on.   Millions of hard working Americans count on Social Security for their retirement every month. It is a vital program that helps lift and estimated 22 million citizens out of poverty every year.

      Under this strategy, one spouse files for social security benefits early (say age 66). This allows the other spouse to claim spousal benefits. Immediately after that is claimed, the first spouse suspends his social security benefits, allowing them to grow until but the other spouse is allowed to continue to receive spousal benefits.   To understand Social Security benefit calculations, you first need to understand one piece of jargon: “primary insurance amount” (PIA). A person’s primary insurance amount is the amount of their monthly retirement benefit, if they file for that benefit exactly at their full retirement age.. A Social Security spousal benefit is calculated as 50% of the other spouse’s PIA.
